I probably came across the "big bang" fic challenge before in some fandom, but honestly I don't remember. So when I stumbled across something today for Firefly I then thought about my current obsession (well, one of them) - Eureka. Huh. I mean, "big bang" is such a Eureka thing anyway. Would I participate? Jeez, I dunno. In some capacity I certainly would.
So now I'm trying to gauge interest. Obviously I need to post on Eureka-specific comms but my head hurts too much to really dig through rules of everything at the moment.
To sum up the big bang thing, lemme quote LJ comm's thelittlebang:
the big bang, the cosmic explosion that is hypothesized to have marked the origin of the universe
the little bang, like the big bang, only smaller
[insert fandom + "big bang" or variation thereof] a challenge;
for writers, 15,000 words or more of _ in less than 4 months;
for artists and vidders, fanart and fanvids to complement the stories
[word count ranges from 15K to 50K]
Interested in any capacity? Please leave a comment! (may have a poll later)
Respond if you... want to participate (any fic genre), want to draw, do graphics, beta, mod/admin, cheerlead, or if you'd just like to see more fic!
P.S. Original "big bang" challenge is apparently big_bang_hd.
Song search + Odds&ends?
May. 24th, 2009 11:59 amSong search: I’m trying to get my hands on a copy of the remix of NIN’s “The Day the Whole World Went Away” that plays during the Terminator: Salvation trailers. It’s not the original version featured on their albulm Fragile. Already checked. I did a search on iTunes/Amazon but the versions aren’t right from what I can tell from the previews.
Request/shout-out: I’m working on a variety of crafts this summer, including jewelry with “found objects” and experimenting with resin casting. What am I asking for? Well, I’m curious if you’ve got little items lying around that you don’t want (or maybe you want modified?) that I might be able to use. I’m thinking game pieces, barbie shoes, old keys, old music tapes, etc.
Please contact me through my gmail address of claritycw
Thanks!
Man from UNCLE?
May. 17th, 2009 03:57 pmNo purchase required, though I ask for re-embursement for shipping since it'll be a mega box. I'll be sure to count exactly how many tapes there are before hand.
Also, I've got a number of Gundam Wing Japanese books - two "perfect files" for Endless Waltz, additionally the film comic, and the Peacemakers (or something) manga.
And a Rinoa (of FF8) statuette.
Hilarious!
May. 13th, 2009 12:09 pmlolz. Hodges and Wendy... ftw. New favorite side-pairing, I think. Hodges has hilarious fantasies based off the show. Wendy certainly has to dress in some weird getups. *g* But omg... they're cute. Hilarious. *snickers*
Ok, I'm going back to watching the show now.
Aww, and this bartender just gave Nick a free dvd of Astro Quest. (And suddenly I can totally see a lil' slash pairing... *grin*)
Graduation ftw?
May. 8th, 2009 05:34 pmI looked up my grades and I rocked my last semester with all A's! In fact, my GPA went back to what it'd been before last semester's. So I definitely managed to stay in the cum laude range. =) I'm really, really happy about that. And tomorrow at the honors convocation I get my certification and $100 for my prize-winning essay. >^,,^< Whee! Then Sunday AM I graduate. Holy crap, man.
I am kinda sore, pretty tired, and hungry. The latter will be taken care of shortly as my mom and one of our family friends has gotten into town. Yay for Panera's! Salad/sandwich sounds soooo nummy right now. =)
Anyway, can't believe this is the end of my undergrad career. Sheesh.
DONE, done, DONE. & newest obsession
May. 6th, 2009 04:14 pmSpeaking of which, I've fallen hard and fast for Jack Carter/Nathan Stark of Eureka. And
( recs for the win! )
Okay, now I just need
Seminar: Gender reading list
*Kramer, Laura. 2004. The sociology of gender: A brief introduction. (Pretty general book, we only read sections of it.)
*Salzinger, Leslie. 2003. Genders in production. (Maqueladoras in Juarez, Mexico; gender and its connection to out-of-country work. Interesting, but is it definitely an academic text.)
*Craig, Maxine L. 2002. Ain't I a beauty queen?: Black women, beauty, and the politics of race. (I liked this one quite a bit. Interesting text we used to study social movements. Talks a heck of a lot about reframing the idea of beauty standards and in particular looks at hair - straightening, "the natural," the afro...)
*Bumiller, Kristin. 2008. In an abusive state: How neoliberalism appropriated the feminist movement against sexual violence. (I'll post my paper in full for this... I am actually selling this back - the only soc book in 4 years that I am. I had a really, really hard time dealing with this book. In many ways it's graphic... but like, a personal level graphic. I felt like it was ripping into me. What frustrated most of our class is Bumiller's tone. And she offers no suggestions for possible solutions or what a better system would look like.)
*Pascoe, C.J. 2007. Dude, you're a fag: Masculinity and sexuality in high school. (Yes, it is as good as the title suggests. Really interesting and you get a very in-depth understanding and frame to consider the label of "fag.")
Topics: Soc of Sexuality
* Ed. Kimmel, Michael S. & Plante, Rebecca F. 2004. Sexualities: Identities, behaviors, and society. (It's a reader with tons of articles on a bunch of subjects. Certainly there are better articles than others, but I did like the book. I couldn't read all of Freud, though, because he just pisses me off.)
*Schwartz, Pepper, & Rutter, Virginia. The gender of sexuality. (A fairly general text but has some good chapters. mostly we used it for beginning the latest subject.)
Ingraham, Chrys. (2007? '08?) White Weddings. (This is FABULOUS. Though some people got upset because depending on how you read it you can get really guilty feeling about making elaborate wedding plans. Or get depressed. But the book is fascinating. Ingraham goes into the "heterosexual imaginary" and how widespread the idea of the wedding is. Good god, look what all its used to sell! Fascinating.)
*Nagel, Joane. Race, ethnicity, and sexuality: Intimate intersections, forbidden frontiers. (A good book with a lot of interesting material. We've been using this book primarly the last month and a half of school. Talks about Othering, Eroticizing, how we think of Others as exotic... goes into sex and gender as weapons in war; sex tourism; and more things on home shores.)
*Tiefer, Leonore. Sex is not a natural act & other essays. (While the book isn't quite as wonderful as its title, there are some very interesting things in here. Tiefer is a sexologist and femininist. She uses some of her presentation speeches and old columns and they're interesting to read. I don't always agree with her, she's frequently a little more radical than I care for. But still a lot of good material and interesting things to think about.)
Okay, there's the reading list! I will try to back up/bookmark the various articles we had assigned as well as videos from online. Off the top of my head I'll guide you to "Tough Guise," which is really easy to find on YouTube. I know there's a couple people who have the whole documentary up in nine parts. I still haven't seen the full thing, but it's fascinating.
Ta, all. I'll got my sexuality paper to finish and then my article about working wiht ESL students.
Memesx3, because they're fun.
May. 4th, 2009 02:23 am* Pick up to 15 OTPs.
* Describe them in less than 15 words.
* Have your flist guess the OTP.
( guessing games! )
I'll write...
Comment with two characters I write, and I'll write you their first kiss.
Another opportunity to get me to write:
[1] Go to my list of fics and pick out a line or three from one of my stories.
[2] I will respond with which story of mine I think it's from.
[3] A drabble of choice for the first three of you that manage to stump me

A Question of Gender Characteristics
May. 3rd, 2009 07:41 pm( masculinity, femininity... desexualization? )
Oh I find all the ways to procrastinate...
May. 2nd, 2009 07:35 pmIn the middle of revising a paragraph it occured to me that I can export the play list info from iTunes. ;;U_U Why is this an important thing? Well, with planning to make two "your OTP as a musical!" for the theme this month on FST, I've got temporary playlists of possible songs to use. I could totally use opinions about the songs and value (amusement or serious) to constructing a "musical" playlist. =p
The pairings in question for this month are The Dead Zone's Bruce/Johnny (my OTP of all time, lolz) and Firefly's Mal/Simon. =3
Paper-writing... on Resident Evil
May. 2nd, 2009 07:10 pmIn any case, I'm still debating what I want to say about the women - Claire Redfield and Angela Miller. There's the possibility to argue that Claire is actually desexualized. That bothers me for some reason and I'm not sure whether I want to go there or not. What's so far written into the paper is about the four male characters of the film - Downing, Davis, Curtis, and Leon. While I rope Downing and Davis into a similar loop and Curtis not far beyond, the four men are actually fairly distinct in their own little circles. I'm not concerned about fleshing them out much more, though. Like I said, I really don't care about these last papers. I've got a solid A in the class and as long as I don't get below a B on the paper I'm fine. Even if I failed it (which would be impossible at this point) the end result won't effect my GPA. Um, yeah. Graduating and having a GPA that gets me cum laude is all I care about in my general classes...
It's practicum that has me a little worried. But that's a longer story and probably not so important for y'all. =p I'll get to work now. Ta!
Two visible examples of the magnets I've been working on. Two general sizes, as you can see. Involves simple collage and piecing together. I'm loving these. And yes they will be for sale! Soon!
The above close-up is of a necklace I shall be giving to my friend for a graduation gift. I'm looking forward to doing more of these necklaces, but I think it's important to gift my first piece.
FST x 2 for Zack Fair!
Mar. 13th, 2009 01:51 pmSo I don't have to repost details, I'm linking to my LJ posts. Don't worry, they're unlocked and accessable to all. Feel free to comment here with feedback, thanks, or suggestions - whatever! =3 Eventually I'd like to work on other characters (I have a good bit of a SOLDIER mix started, actually.)
Disk 1: Don't Stop Me Now - Zack Fair
Disk 2: Not Goodbye - Zack Fair & Co
(and is anyone else still a little offput by Zack's last name? Well, actually I think Genesis' last name is hilarious... don't know why. U_U)
Let's talk about sex(uality), baby....
Mar. 2nd, 2009 03:27 pmAt some point I'll list the various texts we've been reading and probably provide a few links to things we've read/watched online. At the moment, though, the reading done for today was particularly impactful in my opinion.
